12.02.10 | Mingle and Jingle

What: Mingle and Jingle on Main St.
Mingle and Jingle is the retail kickoff for the holiday season in downtown Columbia. It is designed to highlight the businesses in the downtown corridor. This year, they will have live music, dancing, spoken word, and some surprises in store on the outdoor stages. Art will be the name of the game with at least six different art shows going on inside locations up and down the street.

When: December 2, 2010, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Where: 1500 Block of Main St.

11.28.10 | State Capitol Carolighting Ceremony

What: 44th Annual State Capitol Carolighting Ceremony
Gov. Mark Sanford and Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin will kick off the holiday season with the 44th annual Carolighting ceremony. The free ceremony will feature area choirs, including the Carolighting Children's Choirthe U.S. Army 282nd Brass Band Quintet, the Benedict College Gospel Choir, the Together For Him trio and Pleneros del Sur band as well as bands and Angel Morey of “America's Got Talent.” The ceremony will conclude with the lighting of the 34-foot white-fir Christmas tree

12.03.10 | Swim Meet Volunteers Needed

What: Carolina Aquatics Swim Meet Timers Needed
Carolina Aquatics, a non-profit competitive swim team, needs volunteers to assist as timers for an upcomiong swim meet. Refreshments will be served to volunteers.

Where: Blatt PE Center at USC

When: December 3-5, 2010
Available volunteer times include:
Dec 3 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 6 – 10 p.m.
Dec 4 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and 6 – 10 p.m.
Dec 5 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 6 – 10 p.m.

Volunteer judges are needed for the Region II Qualifying competition scheduled for Tuesday, December 7. The event will be at Brookland Cayce High School and starts around 1:30 at (ending as early as 3:00 or as late as 5:00--depends on how many students in the event). At least one judge is needed for the follow events:

The Carolina Carillon Holiday Parade, 5K Run and Volunteer Opportunity

The 57th Annual Carolina Carillon Holiday Parade will be held Saturday, December 4 on Gervais Street in downtown Columbia. The theme "12 Days of Christmas" will feature dozens of floats, marching bands, drill teams and live performances.

The parade will begin at 9:45 a.m. at Gervais and Bull Streets and proceed west on Gervais, pass in front of the State House, and continue into the Vista to Park Street.

Joining the parade this year as Grand Marshal is... The University of South Carolina 2010 National Championship Baseball Team!

Volunteers are needed between 8:30 and 11 a.m. to help with the 5k. Tasks will include registering runners, passing out waters, directing runners at corners, etc. They also get breakfast and a t-shirt for their efforts.

What: 21st Annual Palmetto Health Foundation Festival of Trees
Decorated trees, wreaths and other holiday items will be up for bid during a weekend-long silent auction to benefit Palmetto Health Children's Hospital. It's a great way to get into the holiday spirit, give back to Children's Hospital and get your holiday shopping done...all in one visit to Festival of Trees at Village at Sandhill. 26th Annual Carolina/Clemson Blood Drive

What: 26th Annual Carolina/Clemson Blood Drive
All University of South Carolina and Clemson University students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans are encouraged to participate. Blood can be donated at USC or Clemson. All presenting blood donors at the University of South Carolina will receive a commemorative long-sleeve blood drive T-shirt and a variety of free food. The coveted blood drive trophy will be awarded to the winning team at the game on Nov. 27 at “Death Valley” (Clemson Memorial Stadium).

When: November 15-19, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

Where: Russell House Ballroom (1400 Greene Street, 2nd Floor)

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood.
